Chase watched the girl, he didn't think he'd seen her before but then a lot of drifters passed through here.
This was a tough part of the hood, his clientele made up mostly of bikers and the odd cop looking for an excuse to shut him down.
His bar was rough, the walls needed painting the furniture replaced and the boiler serviced but it took money, money he didn't exactly have.
It was quiet; the weekends were his busiest times, pouring a drink for Mark, one of his regulars he chatted to pass the time, every so often he would glance over at the girl.
"Quiet tonight Chase"
"Yep, might get to close early"
He watched as the girl approached the bar.
"What can I getcha?"
"Another scotch no ice"
"Look kid, you better have ID, I've got enough hassle with the Cops without serving under agers"
Fumbling in her jacket she pulled out a card and threw it onto the counter.
Chase studied it, deciding it was genuine he gave it back to her, "Scotch no ice"
Soon she was back for another then another, Chase poured, she had money not his problem she was a drunk.
According to her ID her name was Ayashe Wildhorse; from her DOB she had just turned twenty one.
Native American, never had one of those before but then why not, he had all sorts in his bar.
Walking over he shoved the glass in front of her, "Anything else?"
She shook her head.
"Who's the kid?"
"Dunno, she's been here most of the afternoon, she can fairly down them"
Trish looked at her, "Pretty badly beaten, I wonder where she's from?"
Chase shrugged, "No business of mine, you get your studying done?"
"Yeah, I thought I'd come and give my big brother a hand" Trish looked round, "Quiet!"
"I might get to lock up early, Christ knows the last time I got to bed before midnight"
"I'll hang around, keep you company"
The noise from one of the pool tables drew his attention, the lads larking about looked up to see Chase's cold stare, quietening down they went back to there game.
Yeah, early night.
Trish sat at the bar; she guessed the girl was a few years younger than her, "Hi"
The girl turned and gave a nod.
"You live round here; it's just that I've not seen you before?"
"Nope"
"You got a name?"
"Yep"
She looked at her brother who pointed at his head mouthing she's nuts, "I'm Trish"
The girl sipped her drink.
Trish smiled, "So what brings you to our little place?"
Giving a shrug the girl stared at her empty glass, "Another..."
"Scotch no ice" Chase took her glass.
"Make it a double"
Picking up her glass Ash went into the back room.
"I guess the conversations over"
"Like I said, nuts"
Leaving Trish at the bar Chase wandered round, picking up empties and wiping down tables.
In the corner was a small stage set up with some instruments, nothing fancy but they had a few good players who liked to jam at the weekend.
Ash gave the drums a tap then turned her attention to the guitar, "Hey, can anyone play these?"
"Yeah"
Soon the room was filled with the sound of Avenged Sevenfold's Dear God, Chase stopped and watched, she was pretty good, he thought of joining her, drums being his thing.
Picking up her empty glass he went back to the bar, maybe another time.
"You think maybe you've had enough?" Chase asked as he put the glass down.
"Why, you refusing?"
"No, not yet, just you've been downing that stuff like water"
"And it's to do with you why?"
Chase shrugged and walked off, like she said nothing to do with him.
By nine thirty the place was empty apart from Mark and the kid, Trish was on the phone so Chase did the till.
Three fifty one not including the loose change, not bad for mid week but once the weekend hit they would clear a grand easy; putting the money in the safe he served the girl who by this time was definitely looking worse for wear.
Ash downed her drink in one go then asked for another, her words slurred.
Chase obliged then left her to it, as long as she could hold it in and not leave it all over the floor why the hell should he care.
Ash sat at the bar her head spinning, how many had she had, God knows but not enough to forget, picking up her glass she ordered another then sat at one of the tables, hopefully after a few more she wouldn't remember anything.
Swirling the drink in her hand she tried to focus, looking up she caught the barman watching her, he was one hell of a scary bastard and the way he kept looking at her gave her the creeps.
Another gulp and her glass was empty again, the barman suddenly appeared, sitting a glass in front of her, "One for the road" he told her, hinting it was time she went.
An hour later Trish walked back into the bar and gasped, the girl was slumped at one of the tables, out cold.
"Hell Chase, how many she had?"
"Beats me, I lost count"
"Well we can't throw her out like that"
Chase scowled, "Why not"
"She's just a kid, Christ knows what could happen"
From the looks of her it already had, he thought, "I'll call a cab"
Trish went over to the comatose girl, "Hey kid, we've called a cab, what's your address?"
"Nnnoothhinng ffuck offf rrroad" was the response.
Trish looked at her brother, "Can't get any sense out of her"
"I'm not surprised" he growled, so much for his early night.
"She'll have to stay here"
"Are you mad" Chase argued, "We know nothing about her"
"Come on Chase, where's your humanity?"
"Lost that years ago" he sneered, "You can't be serious"
"Well we can't just throw her out on the street and we don't know where she lives" Trish pouted, "Just tonight"
He hated it when she did that, "Tonight then she's out, if I fell for every sob story...."
"Thanks bro" giving him a peck on the cheek, "Help me get her up stairs"
Locking up Chase turned off the lights then went to the safe.
He didn't like the idea of this kid staying the night but....well.....his sister was right; he couldn't put her on the street.
Pulling the shotgun he checked to see if it was loaded, best to play it safe.
The old weapon was a legacy from the fella he bought the bar from; it was dated but still worked, so far he hadn't needed to use it.
He really should buy something better and smaller, maybe the M9.
Setting the alarm he headed upstairs.
Ok so he hadn't planed to leave when he did but then he hadn't expected to look after Trish.
Their parent's death was a shock but to find they were broke was just as big a shock, dad never was good with money.
After selling the house to pay the debts there was nothing left for them, Trish was still at Uni, someone had to support them.
Luckily he had some money saved, bought this place, it was a dump in a run down part of the city but they managed, Trish quickly got wise to city life.
Zipping his jeans he went to the sink, splashing water over his face he studied himself in the mirror, he felt older than his thirty one years, a lot older.
Stripping off he threw his clothes in the corner and stretched out on the bed.
He had been looking forward to a good nights sleep but that was up the creek now, his ears would be tuned for the slightest noise, his body ready to leap into action.
Shit Trish, did you have to let that girl stay, he'd probably wake to find a knife at his throat.
Too much responsibility, he sometimes wished he was back in, yeah, no responsibilities, no worries, he'd learnt a long time ago that life was a bitch and that trouble had a habit of kicking him in the ass.
Still he loved his sis, or rather half sister, nah, he couldn't go back on his word now.
Ash opened her eyes and stared at the unfamiliar ceiling, the pounding in her head made her wince.
Damn she was dry; she could go a cold one right now, where the hell was she?
She tried to remember the previous night; she had wandered the streets looking for somewhere new to kip.....coming across Paddy's bar.
The money she had nicked from the ladies purse was gone, spent on drink.
Well Ayashe, you've fucked up proper now.
She needed to go but sitting up made her head thump more, fuck!
Looking round the room, the bed was old but comfy the sheets clean, a hotel, nah she couldn't afford one.
The walls were freshly painted the window naked.....
That wasn't the only think naked, Ash stared at her clothes, neatly folded on a dresser, looking under the covers she found she was wearing nothing but her panties, who, what the hell?
There was a lady, Trudy, no Trish, that's it and......
Maybe this is her place, had to be, deciding not to go looking for the bathroom she slid back under the covers.
The city clock struck four, she could hear the road sweeper as it passed under her window, lifting the rubbish of the past day.
Slipping out of bed she checked her pockets for her knife, they were empty.
Not much she could do but wait till sunrise then run like hell.
Opening the door she looked round, with nobody about she tiptoed down the stairs, at the bottom she found her self in the living room - dinner with another door on one side.
This led to the bar and the main exit, turning the handle she pushed the door open..
"You gotta be somewhere important?"
Well, that explained while no alarms went off, "No, just figured I'd get out your way"
"You not going to thank Trish for putting you up?"
"Tell her I said thanks"
"Tell her I said thanks"
"If it were up to me I'd have thrown your ass on the street" he could have sworn he heard her say something about it already being there.
"What have you nicked"
"I haven't stolen anything" She had thought about it but decided just to get the hell out.
"Yeah, your the regular little saint, empty your pockets"
"FUCK YOU!"
Chase smiled, "Either you do it or I will and believe me I'm well practiced in frisking"
Ash swallowed hard, she bet he was, walking towards him she turned her pockets inside out, "Empty, happy can I go now?"
"I'm happy" turning he headed back to the apartment, "You hungry, Trish will have breakfast ready?"
Ash stood at the door watching him, hungry she was starving; she went to follow then stopped; she didn't like or trust him but her rumbling stomach made up her mind.
Ash sat at the table with the man next to her.
"You've met my sister, Trisha but everyone calls her Trish and I'm Chase"
She looked at them suspiciously, "Ash"
"Well Ash, you can fairly down them, Christ there's not many here that could drink like that"
"Where you from?" Trish shouted from the fridge.
"Around, no place special"
"You must be from somewhere?" Trish queried.
"All over I suppose"
"How long you been in the city?"
"Three weeks"
Sensing her nervousness Trish didn't ask any more questions.
Trish placed the bowls in front of them, "Eat up"
Chase and Trish watched as the girl promptly scoffed the lot, "Help yourself to seconds"
Sitting back down Ash noticed there faces, "I haven't eaten since yesterday"
Chase glanced at his sister, more like a few days.
"So, Ash is that short for something?"
"Ayashe" the girl replied between mouthfuls.
"That's unusual, is it Native American, what's your surname?"
Ash looked at them, what's with the third degree, "Brenner"
Raising an eyebrow Chase kept quiet, concentrating on his breakfast.
"My brother here owns the bar; I'm at Uni studying to be a Doctor, what do you do?"
Ash shrugged her shoulders.
"You play a mean guitar"
With no replay Chase continued, "Yep, I play the drums, maybe we could jam together sometime?"
"Now Bro, don't put any pressure on he kid"
"I was only asking"
Trish finished her breakfast and got up, "Well you two may have all day but I have class in an hour"
"I have to go too" Ash stood to leave, "Thank you for the food and the bed"
"No problem, anytime" Trish smiled.
Chase followed her out, just to make sure her fingers didn't go wandering.
Ash felt uncomfortable, she didn't like him breathing down her neck.
He watched as she made her way to the exit, she was a jumpy one that was for sure, the slightest thing and she would practically stick to the ceiling.
"I suppose you'll be back tonight?"
"Nah, I'll probably move on"
Chase nodded, "Places to go people to see!"
"That's right"
Reaching the door she pushed it open.
"Hey kid, You gonna be alright?"
The door closed behind her.
Chase watched as she slowly walked down the street.
If she was leaving town she was heading in the wrong direction, he thought as he waved to old man Parsons.
Ash was off to pick up her stuff then move on; she never stayed in one place to long, she stopped, the squad car parked at the top of the road getting her attention her eyes darting from side to side, looking for the Cop.
Now why was she avoiding the police? Chase wondered.
Seeing her backtrack he ducked back into the bar, he knew exactly where she was heading.
"Morning Officer, what can I do for you?"
"I'm looking for a woman, just wondered if she's been through here?"
"What she look like?"
Chase listened as the Cop gave a description of Ash, "Nope, can't say I have, looking like that I'd remember"
"If you do see her give as a call"
"Will do, what she wanted for?"
"I can't say but she's dangerous, best to call and let us deal with her"
"No problem" like he would fucking call them.
"You Chase Lincoln?"
"Yep"
"The guys at the station told me about you, Marine Corps, Special Ops!"
Seeing a mop of red hair sticking over the counter he moved forcing the Cop to turn, his back towards the counter.
"I heard all about you hitting one of our guys"
"That so!"
"You sticking up for the gangs"
"I didn't want my placed wrecked, Bikers, Cops it's all the same, someone starts a fight in my place and I finish it"
The Cop laughed, "Not the story I heard but another time"
"You done" Chase growled, this asshole was starting to piss him off.
"For now"
"Well we don't open till six, best you come back then"
"I might just do that" the Cop made for the door, "If you do see her be sure to give us a call"
Going round the bar he looked at Ash, Christ she was shaking, whatever she had done he didn't think she was dangerous.
Seeing the Cop come out one of the shops she had shot through the door and ducked behind the bar.
Staying as quiet as a mouse she hoped Chase wouldn't give her away, surprised when he didn't.
"It's ok he's gone"
Ash peeked over the top; with no one about she stood up and faced Chase.
"What was all that about?"
Looking round, trapped, she would have to go past him to get out, she started to back away.
"Look, I won't rat you out, I'm not exactly friends with them myself"
She wasn't taking any chances, diving for the bar.
In one swift move Chase grabbed her, slamming her against the wall he pinned her there.
"Now maybe you can explain?"
Ash froze, her blood ran cold, terrified she closed her eyes,"Go away, go away" she mumbled over and over again.
He saw the look of terror on her face but ignored it, "Talk"
"I...I...I"
"Look kid enough acting, either you tell me or I'll call that son of a bitch back"
"I stole some money, I was hungry"
"Money!"
Ash nodded, her face inches from his muscular body; she could see a nerve twitching in his neck, smell the soap mixed with his own scent.
"Shit, I thought you had killed someone the way you shot round here"
Ash shook her head.
The kid was a snivelling little thief, as crimes go that was the lowest, cowardly.
"Well my little thief, what will I do with you?"
Ash waited....
Pressing himself against her he snarled, "What will I do with you?" her body was trembling, the kid was scared shitless.
"Any ideas?" he asked seductively.
"Please, don't, I'll leave; you'll never see me again"
"I don't doubt it, you got money?"
"No"
Pulling up a chair Chase light a cigarette.
It hadn't taken much to persuade the kid to stay, fear would have had her agree to anything.
He would tell Trish later when he worked out why he had done it, he was never one for hard luck stories.
He was known as a hard ass in the Corps and still was hence the disagreement with the Law, he didn't take bull from anyone.
This kid was different, he new a Liar when he saw on, and she was hiding something, probably the reason he wanted her to stay, his nose getting the better of him.
Right Chase, it had nothing to do with your reaction to her, he couldn't remember the last time he had a hard on like that.
She was pretty, even with the crap on her face and her body although a little thin felt good.
"Right, your job is to clean the tables and sweep up"
Ash listened as he explained where everything was kept, confused as to why he was doing this?
"You'll get ten dollars a day plus board" he waited for a protest but none came, "I'll also keep the Cop's off your back, you got any stuff to pick up"
"Not much"
"Give me the address and I'll fetch it"
Ash gave him the directions to the derelict building and where she hid her stuff, if he was shocked at her situation he didn't show it.
"I have to go out for a bit, I'll pick it up on my way back" grabbing his jacket, "One more thing, if I find anything goes missing I'll personally haul your sorry ass to the Cop's"
"I have to go out for a bit, I'll pick it up on my way back" grabbing his jacket, "One more thing, if I find anything goes missing I'll personally haul your sorry ass to the Cop's"
"Oh Chase, I'm so glad, she's a nice kid, I think she just needs a break"
"I'm not doing it for her, I could use the help in the bar, with your exams coming up you'll be studying a lot more that leaves me one short"
"If you say so, but ten dollars hell that's nothing!"
"It's all she'll get plus free lodgings what she need money for apart from drink, and from the looks of it the less she drinks the better, anyway I bet she doesn't last long, a few days, a week and she'll be gone"
Trish smiled; he was a big softy at heart although she wouldn't say it to his face.
Chase took a swig of beer, "So in a few months you'll be Dr Trisha Lincoln, I hope I get family rates" he grinned.
"Oh I don't know about that" she teased.
The following afternoon Ash helped Trish with the errands.
It had rained during the night but it hadn't cleared the mugginess from the air, the leaves fell from the trees and scattered on the ground, the first signs of autumn.
The street was stuck between two industrial sites, one now abandoned and a relatively new one it's huge tanks dominated the scenery, the row of trees did nothing to soften the landscape.
With it's derelict and crumbling buildings, the outdated street lamps and graffiti it was the last place Ash would expect to find someone like Trish, Chase yes but not his sister.
Ash followed Trish from shop to shop, keeping her eyes out for the law.
An hour later they made there way back to the bar.
"You won't find the Cop's around unless they get a call; they kind of ignore this place"
Ash gave her a side glance, how much had Chase told her?
"It's ok" Trish laughed, "He only told me you were in a spot of bother with them, he didn't go into details"
Ash sighed in relief, "Was I that obvious?"
"Just a bit, some advice if I may, ditch the hair and piercings they have those in your description"
Her hair, but it was part of her, a barrier, people took one look and backed off.
Seeing her apprehension Trish added, "The Cop's are looking for a punk with bright red hair"
Ash stared at herself in the mirror; at least she thought it was her.
She didn't like it, she felt...naked..
Trish had lent her the money to buy the dye and it had taken a few goes to get her own colour back.
While in the shower Trish had yelled to her to use Chase's room while she put curtains up in the one she was using.
Chase's room was just as stark as her own, a few rock posters hung on the wall, it was also very neat and tidy obviously drilled into him during his Marine days.
She studied her face, the swollen eye was better the bruising almost gone, the cut on her cheek was healing slowly.
Dropping the towel she pulled on her panties then reached for her socks.
A shocked Chase stood in the doorway, "What the hell are you....?"
Ash turned and faced the wall, trying to cover herself, "Trish said to use your room, she, she was putting curtains up in mine"
"She could have bloody told me" walking over to his dresser, "You been snooping?"
"NO!"
Taking something out of the drawer he turned to leave, "Embarrassed, now how can that be, after all in your situation...." deliberately not finishing his sentence.
Ash blushed and tried to cover more of herself, tears stung her eyes at Chase's words.
"Besides your much to skinny, although if you offered, free of course" he smirked closing the door behind him.
Trish with her finals only eight weeks away spent most of her time in her room studying.
To Chase's surprise Ash was a good worker, doing everything that was asked of her, she seemed nervous round men with one occasion running into the living quarters when one of them made a pass at her.
It had taken some persuasion but he had finally convinced her to carry on working, from then on Chase kept a close watch on the punters.
He never mentioned the incident in his room but for some reason he found his mind wandering more and more to the sight that had met him that day.
Sunday, the only day the bar didn't open, with Trish hold up in her room knee deep in papers and Chase out on his bike Ash turned on the TV.
An old black and white western was on, the dialogue was bad the acting cheesy but soon she was glued to the screen.
"What you watching?"
Ash jumped, Christ did he have to sneak up on people like that, "An old western"
"Any good?"
Ash shook her head.
Chase noticed she had become fidgety; as if she didn't want to be around him, sitting on the same sofa, "You got any family?"
Ash again shook her head.
"I've never seen eyes that colour on a Native American?"
"My father was Pawnee my mother from Chicago"
"Where are they now?"
"Dead"
"I'm sorry" he could almost feel the discomfort she felt at his proximity, Chase moved closer.
"What the Cop's want you for?"
Ash went red,"I told you, I stole money"
"And you expect me to believe that, they wouldn't go to all that trouble, sending a Cop out on the street just to find a thief" he moved closer till their bodies almost touched, "What they really want you for?"
"I....I, think I'll go to my room" she stammered.
"Running away again!"
"No, I...I..."
Chase walked towards her backing her against the wall, "Now, how do I convince you I'm a good guy" he murmured.
He stood close, his hand moved slowly up and down her arm; the look on her face told him it was working.
"Such a jumpy little thing, aren't you"
Ash turned away, afraid to look at him, she wished Trish would come down or the phone would ring.
"You really should drop the act, it won't work with me"
Reaching out he stroked her hair, it was nasty of him but he couldn't help winding her up.
Ash closed her eyes, her mouth dry, he wouldn't would he, Trish could walk in at any moment?
The dark colour suited her, much better than that awful red she had before, it had been the second thing he had noticed that day, the first being her body, he wouldn't mind seeing that again.
"How did you get the bruises?"
She didn't answer.
Chase never had problems with woman before, he knew he had looks and in uniform the woman swooned but this one, this kid got to him, confused him.
"Cat got your tongue Ayashe Wildhorse?"
His hand slid round her head, grabbing a hand full of hair he forced her head up.
Ash kept her eyes closed, unwilling to meet his gaze.
Just how much of a fish was she, he leaned over, his lips a breath away from hers.
Ash's heart hammered, the palms of her hands felt sticky, her body shook uncontrollably.
Christ he thought to himself, what the hell are you doing, you're not that much of a bastard.
He searched her face for something, anything that would tell him why he was acting this way then let go.
Ash ran to her room.
He heard the door slam.
She felt sick, what was it with men?
Time to move on, get the hell out before something happens, she had enough money saved to get a bus to the north.
It was tough; life dealt her one blow after another, getting to the point were she stole to eat, slept in the street.
It hadn't always been like this, her life used to be normal...ish, happy.
Her and dad were close, just the two of them then he was told he had cancer, relying on the Shaman who had been unable to help and the lack of money preventing the more costly treatments.
She had been there at the end, had said goodbye.
Her mother was not happy being lumbered with a fifteen year old but she had no choice, the endless parties, fights and drug addiction, her mother never knew nor cared were she went or did.
Finally Ash was thrown out...a week before her sixteenth.
On the street she learnt the hard way to survive, to take care of herself.
She met up with others near her age, like her, they looked out for one another, cared for each other but as they got older the drifted apart, some got involved in drugs others with men.
Finding her self in this city, if only she had known....
Her mind replayed that night, like it had so many times since.
The voices waking her, watching from a distance she saw them, the men arguing over the price, the shots fired echoed round the empty building.
Trying to sneak away she had slipped, they caught her and demanded to know what she had seen, she had to die but first.....
The sound of a car distracted them. that's when she had got away, reaffirming her fear of Cop's.
The sound of a car distracted them. that's when she had got away, reaffirming her fear of Cop's.
Chase listened to the noise in the street, the cars passing, voices raised in argument, doors being slammed.
Just another typical night.
He tried to shake Ash from his mind but couldn't, he felt bad, he honestly thought if he made a pass she would drop the act.
Arrogant Chase, you always were to sure of yourself.
It was nasty of him but he had been enjoying it.....till, she really wasn't acting, the fear in her eyes, her body shaking told him that.
No she was more than scared she was terrified, he had seen it before, the body and mind shut down trying to block the situation out.
Now he felt a complete bastard, he should apologise, his actions low.
Something bad happened to the kid, it wasn't a simple case of stealing, was that how she got the beating?
He still had friends in the Corps, people that could do some checking up on the girl.
Maybe Trish could get something out of her, girls had a habit of talking, a lot, telling each other there deepest secrets.
The odd thing was, he really had wanted to kiss her, her closeness had stirred his libido, made his groin ache.
Christ Chase, she's twenty one, a kid, find someone your own age.
Even so!
Chase woke; the scream shattering the air.
Reaching for his gun he leapt out of bed.
His mind was on overdrive all sorts of things running through it, opening the door he looked into the hall, nothing.
Running downstairs he looked into the living room, empty.
Baffled he went back up, Trish's door was open, he peeked in that too was empty, what the hell?
He was about to knock on Ash's door when he heard Trish's voice followed by crying.
He tapped on the door....
Standing in the doorway he watched Trish comfort Ash who was howling her eyes out.
Jesus!
Trish mouthed she''ll be ok, keeping her arm tightly round the inconsolable kid.
Putting the safety on the gun he felt he should leave them alone but the sight of Ash in such a state held him there, had knocked the wind out of him.
Ash stopped crying, embarrassment taking it's place, "I'm sorry, I don't know what came over me"
"It's ok, not your fault, nightmares can be a bitch"
A nightmare, Christ it must have been a hum dinger, "I'll put the gun away, anything you want me to do?"
"We'll be fine" she turned to Ash, "Come on let's go down stairs and have a cuppa"
Trish managed to get Ash to talk.
Slowly she told her about the deal, the Cop's involved, the murders and what happened after, not able to say it out loud.
Trish listened in shocked silence, the poor girl, she fought the urge to hug Ash, she was angry how could anybody do that especially the law.
"So why tonight, I mean you haven't had a nightmare since you've been here?"
Ash swallowed the last of her of her coffee, unsure she should mention the incident earlier.
Trish was persuasive, getting Ash to spill everything.
Chase pulled on a pair of jeans then sat on his bed, giving the girls time to talk, after an hour he headed down.
"Everything ok?" he asked as he walked over to the table.
"Everything ok?" he asked as he walked over to the table.
"I think I'll go to my room for a bit" Ash told Trish quietly, walking round the table to avoid passing him.
Chase took her seat, "So what was all that about?"
Trish looked at her brother, fighting back tears, "Oh Chase!"
She told him, her anger at times showing, Chase held her hand, listened while she stumbled through her conversation with Ash.
He wasn't surprised, like everything else you had the good and the bad, you just had to make sure which side you chose.
"That explains why the Cop's are looking for her"
"Oh my God!" Trish looked at him, horrified.
That explained her nervousness, her fear of the law and her reaction to him.
"Ash told me....."
"Don't, I feel bad enough, it was a moment of stupidity, she annoyed me"
"Even so...your normally so controlled, what happened?"
Chase shrugged, what could he say he didn't know himself.
"We have to do something; I mean they will find her eventually, won't they?"
He nodded; they would have an APB on her in every state, "We can't go to the Cop's...leave it with me"
"You got an idea?"
"Maybe"
Ash lay on her bed, staring into nothing, thinking and feeling nothing.
It was better not to think, thinking brought back memories, images of that night, their laughter, their hands all over her, the........no, best not to think.
Fear had her jumping a mile when he came near her, Chase was no Cop but he was still a threat.
She ignored the knock on the door, wanting to be alone.
Chase entered, "Ash, I'm sorry, If I'd known"
Ash winced.
He hovered, she looked so small, vulnerable.
"Ash?"
She sat up, hugging herself she stared into space.
Going on his knees her reached out towards her, she flinched at his touch; "I won't hurt you" he murmured softly, keeping his hand on her leg as if to reinforce his statement.
"Look, I meant what I said, I'm sorry, I don't normally behave like that...I....damn, I don't know what came over me"
He stroked her leg, "You annoyed me, always jumpy, terrified to so much as look at me, I thought it was an act, a put on for my benefit, I was a complete arse"
Ash sat quietly listening, his voice deep and warm, soothing, his touch sending shivers down her spine, her messed up mind unable to understand what was happening.
Something was telling her to believe him, to trust him but she couldn't.
Chase moved into her line of vision, he touched her cheek, this time she didn't flinch.
The black eye had faded; only up close could you see a hint of purple..
She had the most beautiful skin, like creamed coffee, he had the sudden urge to touch all of her, to taste her skin.
Ash stayed still, his touch so tender she felt herself relax, her fear vanishing, she studied his face, trying to work what he wanted from her.
Chase wanted to pull her close, hold her tight in his arms but common sense told him it was too soon.
Moving he put his arm round her, she stiffened, her heart beating as fast as a humming birds, he waited for the fear to set in, nothing.
Slowly he massaged her back; gradually her body relaxed, her heart beat to a new rhythm.
His touch sent waves of pleasure coarse through her body; she leaned against him, comforted by his touch.
He moved closer allowing his own body to take her weight, he heard a low sob; her tears ran down his chest.
After a while she went quiet, unable to shed any more.
Chase kissed her lightly then let go, without a word he made for the door closing it behind him.
He could kill them, rip their fucking heads off.
But that was not feasible, it would only make things worse, cause trouble for him and the girls, no he had a better way, a quick call should set things rolling.
Poor kid, when Trish told him he felt as if he had been punched in the stomach, an unusual reaction for him, not many things, if any, got to him.
But this did, this kid got to him, he wished he could make it batter, make it go away.
He wasn't stupid, he knew he was falling for her, probably had been since he first clapped eyes on her.
Woman, one in every port that was the way he lived in the Corps, worked hard and played harder, he had struggled with civilian life at first but Trish had helped him through the early days.
He had never thought of marriage, kids and all that shit but now, it didn't sound to bad, he wasn't getting any younger.
He had never met the right one, the special someone that he wanted to spend his life with but the day Ash walked into his bar had changed all that, he had felt something then.
He felt dreadful over his behaviour towards her, even without the rape it was inexcusable, he would give her space; hopefully she would learn to trust him.
Reaching for the floor he scrabbled about, damn, out of smokes, getting off the bed he dressed then grabbed his wallet.
Why, he had been so nice, what did he want?
She really had to ask herself that question, what was it men normally wanted, he was hoping to get her into be, but he seemed genuine; his apology real, wasn't it?
It had been a long time since anyone had shown her any kindness; she had felt so grateful that she had dropped her barriers, never again.
Ash hadn't got this far without being tough, she new how things worked, how people would be nice to you, till they got what they wanted.
This was the first place she had stayed in longer than a month; the first time in God knows how long she had a roof over her head, a clean bed and hot meals.
There was something about him, telling her he was ok, not a threat.
Chase stood at the pumps.
She could feel him watching her but she kept her eyes fixed on the customers, spotting a few dirty tables she grabbed a cloth.
"Hey Chase, how about another" a man shouted from the corner of the bar.
"Sure, just the three of you tonight?"
"Yeah, the gang's at home, big baseball game on"
"Who's winning?" Chase quite enjoyed the game.
"Haven't a fucking clue mate, not my sport" the man laughed.
Chase laughed with him then went to Ash, "You fancy a session?"
"What?"
"You agreed we'd jam together" seeing her hesitation he added, "One song, that's all"
Picking up the sticks he started "Do you know this one?" playing Dio's Holy Diver.
Ash watched for a moment then picking up the guitar joined him.
Near the end Chase switched to Papa Roach's Last Resort, Ash followed, her taste in music the same as his.
The two of them were good together with several of the punters wandering over to watch.
Her fingers moved fast, deliberate, the guitar loving her touch, whoever had taught her was good, damn good.
Finally he put his sticks down, not wanting to push his luck, he had enjoyed it a lot, "We should do that again sometime"
Ash smiled then went back to work, the sound of strings and bass replaced by the clanking of empty bottles.
The wailing of a squad car woke her; she listened as the sound drew closer.
Outside she could hear an alarm, the reason for the Cop's.
She lay listening to the sound, her heart thumping; finally getting up she looked out the window to the street below.
The squad car pulled up outside the bar, one of the Cop's looked up as he got out the car, Ash ducked behind the curtain.
Peeking through the window she saw them cuff a man and bundle him in the car.
After a few seconds it pulled away.
Ash lay down then got up, pacing the floor, nerves prevented her from sleeping; it had been the same for weeks, the sound of squad cars would make her blood run cold.
The bed creaked, he sensed someone there, surprised to find Ash beside him, pressed so close to him he could hardly breathe.
She didn't speak just huddled next to him and went to sleep.
Feeling her trembling he put his arm round her and held tight, her arm lay on his chest a leg draped over his.
He wondered what had brought her here, whatever it was it had scared her enough to come to him; he was glad although a little shocked, maybe the talk this afternoon had helped.
He could feel her against him, her breasts moving in rhythm to her breathing, feeling something stir he tried to think of something other than the body laying close to him..
How can you fall for someone you hardly knew, did it matter? Ash stirred, opening her eyes she gave him a weak smile then went back to sleep.
The feelings he felt were powerful, consuming him, he would do anything for this kid, woman, at twenty one she was technically an adult.
Ash slept soundly, unsure as to why she came to him, instinct had sent her here, a need to feel wanted, loved even in a small way.
Trish would have been the sensible one to go too but she had opened Chase's door, gone to him for comfort and security.
It was early when Chase got up; not wanting to wake Ash he quietly dressed and slipped downstairs.
Having a quick smoke he picked up the phone and punched the numbers.
"Hey Chase, to what do we owe the pleasure, how's civvie life?"
"Not bad Frank, how's the family?"
"You know how it is, the wife wants a new kitchen and the kids, well they always want something, how's Trish?"
"Fine, about to sit her exams"
"Good, good, so what can I do for you?"
"Got some information for you, interested?"
"Shoot"
Chase told him what he knew about the drug deal and the police involved, keeping Ash's name out of it"
"You got proof?"
"Won't be easy without hard evidence but I'll look in to it, what' you planning now that Trish is of your hands?"
"Dunno"
"I know there's an opening in the training camp, one of the trainers is up for retirement, interested?"
"Maybe, I'll think about it"
Frank chuckled, "Ok, give me a couple of days and I'll see what I can dig up, I'll be in touch, say hi to Trish for me"

"Will do, same go's for me and Frank.....thanks"
Chase put the phone down, maybe he should go for the job, he had never been able to settle in civvies street.

Trish needed a break; finding Ash reading she persuaded her to play a game, the two of them were making such a racket they never heard Chase come in.
He stood behind them and watched, Trish was winning but Ash wasn't going to give up, they jostled for first position for a while till Trish did an awesome move, passing the winning post easily.
"Told I was good" she giggled, giving Ash a playful nudge.
"I let you, next time you won't be so lucky"
The girls laughed.
"Is this what call you studying?" Chase asked with amusement.
"Just having a break Bro, going to head up to do a bit more"
Ash went to leave.
"You wanna play?" he asked picking up the control pad.
Chase was lousy at the game but after a while he managed to keep his character on the board.
he was having trouble concentrating, the sound of Ash's laughter did things to him, had him yearning to kiss her.
Ash too found it difficult to play, his body so close to hers had made her heart flutter, her stomach in knots.
Putting the control down he conceded, "I give up, never was very good at that thing, Trish is the gamer"
He stood and went to the kitchen, opening the fridge, "Fancy a cold one ?"

"Ok"
Moving to the kitchen Ash sat down while Chase grabbed the beers.
Opening them he handed one to her then sat; taking a swig from the bottle he lit a cigarette.
Ash stared at the table, her stomach was doing somersaults, "I was thinking of moving on soon"
Chase nearly choked, "You got enough money?"
"Some"
"You don't have to leave so soon, stay another few weeks, till you've saved a bit more"
Ash fiddled with her drink, the truth was she was starting to feel something for him and it unsettled her.
He felt as if he'd been punched, he had to find a way to get her to stay.
Ash downed her drink and stood up....
"Wait" Chase grabbed her forcing her to face him, seeing her fear he immediately regretted it, "Sorry, it's just that....look Trish likes you, the two of you have become friends, don't run out yet"
Ash stared at him her breath caught in her chest.
"At least wait till she sits her exams"
Her mouth had gone dry, images of the night she lay in his arms flashed through her mind, looking at him she realized how magnificent he was was, tall and broad with thick brown hair that always had that just out of bed look and such wonderful deep green eyes, she wanted to see more.

Chase needed to.....
She could feel his breath on her skin, smell the subtle hint of aftershave mixed with cigarettes and beer.
Her body tingled partly from nerves but mostly from desire, she wanted him to kiss her.
Chase, hesitated, expecting her to back off, his lips touched hers gently, almost feather like.
Her body felt weak, tingled...
Her lips were soft and moist, he had wanted to do this for a long time, he felt himself harden his body on fire.
He backed off before his lust got the better of him, "Stay?" he whispered hoarsely.
Ash lay on her bed in dismay; Chase's kiss had knocked her for six.
Was she developing an attachment for him or worse, a crush?
Whatever it was it was drawing her in, if she wasn't careful she could fall for him and hard.
The kiss was wonderful, so delicate it had her aching for more, she'd felt like a child opening a sweet for the first time, she wasn't ignorant she knew there weren't always so nice.
Once in desperation she had slept with a man for a few bucks, the experience had put her off, never again would she sell herself, she would rather starve first.
She was getting too close to both of them; she had to leave and soon.
With nearly two hundred and fifty dollars she had enough to get her far away and eat for a fortnight maybe longer if she was careful.
It was a shame she couldn't say goodbye but Trish would only try and make her stay, with her exams in a weeks time Ash would wait till then.
She felt a sharp pain in her heart, sadness at leaving Trish but also for never seeing Chase again.
It was for the best, after a few days they would forget all about her and move on, as she would.
Chase stepped outside and leaned against the wall.
Autumn had arrived, the leaves fell from the few trees in the street, scattering themselves on the ground they mixed with the rubbish, the air had turned cooler although it wasn't quite time for the heavy coats and warm jumpers.
A customer came out and looked up at the sky, "Looks like rain"
"Yep"
"See you tomorrow Chase"
Putting the cigarette to his lips he draw deeply, "Goodnight"
He watched as the man walk down the road his feet crunching the leaves beneath his feet, Chase disliked the winter, the cold nights; the people staying indoors by their fires.
Summer was much better; the street would be busy, lively, now it was empty and quiet.
Blowing the smoke into the air he watched it rose above him then disperse.
He should go back inside, get cleared up but he enjoyed these moments, it gave him a chance to think and these days he had a lot to think about.
His thoughts drifted to Ash, he understood her apprehension and distrust especially when it came to him, to men but something was happening between them he felt it, he knew his own feelings, had analyzed them over and over always coming up with the same conclusion, Ash on the other hand confused him, she tried to avoid him was jumpy in his presence but she had turned to him when scared.
Maybe in time she would learn to trust him even like him.
Having sat her exams Trish was now able to help in the bar and although it could be busy it wasn't enough to warrant three of them.
She lay on the bed watching the clock, the passing of each minute seemed to take forever, finally it hit two.
She had seen Chase disable the alarm and memorised the numbers, now she entered the code and watched as the red light went out.
The steady drone of beeps warned her she had seconds to get out and close the door, locking it she slide the key back.
Picking up her stuff she walked down the road, allowing the darkness to swallow her.
Chase collapsed onto the chair and rubbed his temple.
"You should get some sleep, you look dreadful" Trish exclaimed worriedly, it had been nearly a fortnight since Ash had left and Chase had been searching every night since with no luck.
"I can't, not till I find her"
"Look, she's tough, used to that life..she''ll be fine"
"Can you be sure, I mean look at what's already happened, no I'll keep going till I find her"
"Christ Chase that could take forever, you really love this girl"
Grabbing a cup of coffee he drank it quickly then reached for his car keys.
"I won't be back till late, can you open up for me"
Trish smiled, "Sure, I hope you find her" not wanting to admit her own worry.
Unsure where to look next he had pointed the car in one direction hitting this small town, why he had picked here he had no idea, she was probably far away by now.
He spent the next four hours searching, finally he had to admit defeat and call it a night.
Heading back to his car he spotted a disused factory, having tried all the others he may as well check this one too.

The doors and windows were boarded but broken; finding an opening he squeezed through.
The building was cold and dank the walls crumbling, the air smelled musty and full of urine; Chase worked his way through the rooms manouvering round the debris.
He had just decided she wasn't here when he saw a shape in a corner of one the room.
"Ash!"
Quietly so as not to startle her he moved closer.
Bending down her reached out, Christ she was freezing.
She was dirty, her face drawn, giving her a gentle shake he tried to wake her but couldn't, she was at risk of developing hypothermia.
Picking her up he carried her to the car.
Wrapping a blanket round her switched on the engine, turning up the heater, it was a two hour drive back to the city hopefully she would have warmed up by then.
Lighting a cigarette he reversed out the gates and started the long drive back.
Ash woke and sat up.
This was Chase's room, how she get here?
"How do you feel?
She stared at him.
"You must be hungry; Trish has some soup on it'll be ready soon"
"Why?"
"Why the soup or why did I find you, you didn't say goodbye plus Trish refused to leave me alone till I found you"
Placing a hand on her forehead, "You're still cold, shower, soup then sleep" he ordered then in a softer tone asked, "Why did you run off?"
Ash shook her head what could she say, that she was scared, of her feelings for him, of rejection.
The shower was wonderful, the warm water washing away the dirt and aches of the last few weeks.
Now with hot soup in her Trish gave her and Chase pasta which they both ate hungrily.
"Chase was surprised by how little you had travelled, I mean the next town you hadn't gone far?"
Ash shrugged, "I had my money stolen as well as some other stuff"
"You should have come back?"
"Well, you can stay here for the winter" Trish insisted.
"That's not necessary"
"You will stay, I'm not looking for you again" Chase ordered.
"I didn't ask for anybody to look for me" she glared at him.
Trish left them to finish eating which they did, in silence.
With her plate empty Ash carried it to the sink, "Thank's for the meal"
"You're planning on leaving now?"
"Yeah" grabbing her jacket.
Ignoring her shouts of protest Chase picked her up and sat her on the kitchen worktop, "Listen to me" he barked.
What choice did she have.
Chase caressed her cheek, the action caused an intense heat to flood her body, "Please don't" she whimpered.
He dropped his hand, "You can't leave"
"Why?"
"I...well, you see, Trish wants you to stay" he couldn't, those three little words, why were they so damn difficult to say.
"I can't, I like Trish but I have to move on"
"Why, is it that important to live rough, sleep on the street, stay here a warm bed, food, Trish" and me he added silently.
"Thank you but no, it's best if I leave now" she tried to get passed him
"Look....I, DAMN IT!" Chase was loosing his cool, he felt as if he was dying inside, "I, I love you"
Ash stared at him shocked?
He run his hand through his hair in frustration, "I know you don't love me but stay, maybe in time you could learn to care for me"
Ash's mind was on overdrive, did he mean what he said, was it possible he loved her.
Her feelings for him were strong but she was scared to admit it, her trust in men had been shattered, broken into a million tiny pieces.
"Trish will be moving on once she receives her certificate" Chase explained, "I've applied for a job back in the Corps"
Should she take the risk, follow her heart, a new life with him sounded good.
"Look, I love you, I want to care for you, be by your side for the rest of me life, think about it"
He had just poured his heart out and probably scared her off for good.

Trish got the news she'd been waiting for, she had passed and was now a qualified Doctor.
Chase was accepted back into the Marines and was due to start on the first of the month; the bar was up for sale.
He hadn't mentioned her going with him since that day and Ash was now wondering if he had changed his mind.
Trish too had found a job and was leaving in a week, leaving Ash alone with him.
The regular customers came into the bar, the same faces and the same old bar; like nothing had changed.
It was the first time in weeks Trish had managed to find time to relax, job interviews had been plenty travelling all over for them finally landing a job in California, after that it was apartment hunting and bank transfers and so on.
"Chase tells me he asked you to go with him, will you?"
"I don't know..."
Trish understood, he mistrust of men, "He loves you deeply"
"He told you?"
"Not in so many words but I know my Brother; he was the one that would'n't rest till he found you, hardly sleeping out till till all hours"
"He told me you insisted!"
Trish laughed, "Yeah I bet he did, don't get me wrong I was just as worried and missed you but he was the one doing all the searching, he was frantic the poor car nearly clapped out"
Ash was amazed, he cared that much?
"Do you love him?"
Ash hesitated, "I, yes, I think so, maybe"
Trish studied her friend closely; she could tell she was fighting her emotions, what she felt for her brother against her battered and bruised confidence.
"He's a good man Ash, he may seem hard but he has a heart of gold, give him a chance to prove it"
Ash sat on her bed and thought, should she give it a go after all what had she to loose.
Settling down sounded good, somewhere to put down roots, to belong her feelings for Chase ran deep but love, no, she refused to believe in that.
Feeling a weight press down on the bed she turned to find Chase beside her.
"The bar has a buyer, I leave in three weeks"
"Yep"
Chase stared at the wall, he had avoided mentioning his move or the fact he wanted her to go with him, now he needed an answer.
"Will you come?"
Her heart was screaming yes but her head said no, warned her it could be a mistake.
She found herself flat on her back with Chase on top holding her down, "Let me go!" Ash demanded.
"Not till I get an answer" why did he always have trouble keeping control around her?
"LET ME GO!" she screamed, "TRISH?"
Chase chuckled, "I'm afraid that won't help, Trish is out"
My god, her body trembled, she wished he would kiss her again; the thought brought her out in goose bumps.
Chase bent closer, his body reacting to the feel of her beneath him, "How can I convince you, I love you"
"Please, let me go"
Rolling over he released her.
Scrambling to top of bed she leant against the wall.
She watched his face change from determination to disappointment, sadness, he really meant what he said.
"I'll go"
"You will?"
"Yes" she said with more conviction that she felt.
Chase crawled up to her, a huge smile spread across his face.
Instinctively Ash reached out, she felt the coarseness of his stubble the firm jaw underneath.
Chase lowered his head to her, his hand slid round her waist, "I...." he let go and back off the bed.
Ash's heart sank, now it was his turn to run?
She stared at the empty room, it was bright and airy the cream walls and floors made it look bigger than it was.
"The doors ahead are the bedroom, we can fight over who gets what later and the door on the right is the bathroom" Chase told her, "Once the furniture is in it will feel more like home"
For the first time in years she had a home, a place of her own of sorts.
Chase went to the kitchen and ran his hand over the cooker, "Not up to much but it will do for now" checking the fridge which seemed to be in better condition.
Ash remained silent with a mixture of excitement and apprehension, she had a terrible headache due to the heat and the lack of sleep having had little the night before.
"What you think?" Chase asked, worried by her silence.
"It's nice"
The apartment complex was relatively new with two being allocated to the Navy, the base was a mile or so down the road.
'Cheveyo Canyon' the name Native American, Hopi, was slap bang in the middle of the dessert. she had never heard of the place.
Her anxieties and insecurities grew making her feel sick, moving to new territory with a man she hardly knew, no matter what she felt towards him it scared her.
The urge to hold her washed over Chase; sensing her fears, "Come on, the quicker we get our stuff in the sooner we can eat, I'm starving"
It didn't take long for them to get settled, placing the big furniture down they left the small stuff in there boxes deciding it was enough for tonight.
Chase found a local takeaway and gave them a ring, soon they were tucking into chow mein and egg foo young.
"Damn, that was the best Chinese I've ever tasted" Case laughed as he patted his stomach.
Ash with her mouth full of food agreed.
"I'll be away early tomorrow, I have to report to base at six but I'll be back around two, will you be alright till then?"
"I'll finish the unpacking"
"Fine"
The day had been heavy going what with meeting his Commander and the squad he'd taken charge of then there was the tour round the base and the usual paperwork, finally at two thirty he put his key in the lock.
He found Ash up to her elbows in suds, busy cleaning the cooker.
"Hi"
Ash pulled her rubber gloves off, turning to face him her mouth dropped.
Chase watched as the colour rushed to her face, "How do I look?"
Ash was rooted to the spot, he didn't look that different....did he?
"If you keep your mouth open like that any longer your at risk of it staying that way" he chuckled.
Hearing his voice Ash turned, the colour rushed to her face, her heart banged like a drum, oh my good he was absolutely gorgeous.
Instead of black jeans and tees he wore a dark blue uniform his cap sat firmly on his head, the thick unkempt mop of hair was cut short and he had shaved!
A warmth travelled up her body her blood thundered through her veins.
"Do I look that different?"
"Yes, no" her legs turned to jelly, her breathing laboured.
"That good eh!" he laughed, placing the cap on the counter he walked towards her.
Her face turned scarlet, Chase was always a striking figure but in uniform he exuded sex.
"I see you've been busy" he observed as he looked at the now spotless fridge and half scrubbed cooker.
"I thought....." her voice failing her."Have you looked round the complex?"
"No" cringing as the word came out in a squeak, she couldn't take her eyes off him.
She reached out to touch him, the close shave that morning still evident.
With s sharp intake of breath Chase grabbed her hand, "I wouldn't do that if I was you" but he didn't push her away.
Her body burned at his touch, holding her breath she stared at him, sparks flew between them the longing for each other holding them in that moment, Ash finally braking the spell with murmurs of seeing to dinner.
She pulled on her night dress feeling decidedly fresher after her shower, the dessert heat was gone for the day replaced by a chill almost cold wind.
Being raised on a reservation in Oklahoma she was used to Tornadoes not the dry humid air and constant dust of the Nevada dessert.
Opening the door she almost walked into Chase, wearing nothing but his shorts.
An intense heat rushed threw her, the beating of her heart grew faster.
"Sorry, I thought....." he mumbled then stopped as her caramel skin turned pink.
Taking a huge breath she went to pass him.....
Blocking her way his hand went to her cheek.
His touch sent a wave of pleasure through her; it rushed through her causing her body to go weak, her breathing to become shallow.
Chase felt the heat rise; his body ached for hers, he hardened, at the same time he felt her tense.
Ash couldn't help it, his shorts unable to hide his reaction, aware of the rising panic in her, as much as she wanted him she was scared, his touch bitter sweet.
Keeping her eyes fixed on is chest she franticly tried to gain control of her emotions.
Slowly he stroked her flushed skin, feeling her relax he moved closer, he wanted her so bad it hurt.
She was weakening, her desire overtaking her fear pushing away the demons in her mind.
His hand moved round, he lent closer, "I want to kiss you"
"Yes" her voice barely audible she closed her eyes, the longing in her grew with each second.
His lips were almost at hers, cherry blossom soap penetrated his senses and underneath was the sent of her, his erection throbbed, his own breathing laboured.
The feel of his lips made her blood sore, her heart skipped a beat with a moan she kissed back.
Chase responded by deepening the kiss, his tongue slipped in making her gasp, he tried to keep control, afraid his passion would frighten her off.
It was a loosing battle, he knew his resolve was weakening, his ardour beginning to dominate.
He pulled her closer, his hold on her tightened.
Ash clung to him, running her hands over his bare skin his taught muscles, the action causing a low growl to escape him.
She felt as if she was melting, expecting to find herself a pool on the floor, her body tingled a damp heat spread between her legs.
The sob that came from her was one of desire, of desperation; she wanted his kiss, his touch and so much more.
As if understanding Chase lifted her off the floor, kicking open the door to his room.
Setting her on the bed her undid the buttons of her nightie.
Chase caught his breath as his eyes moved down her naked body, the view he had last time was nothing compared to seeing her now.
Ash squirmed from a mix of eagerness and nerves, she felt vulnerable but at the same time extremely turned on.
His hands ran down her back making her shudder, he kissed her hungrily pressing himself against her, her bare skin against his own was exquisite.
"Are you sure?" he whispered hoarsely as he searched her face for any sign of doubt.
Ash pulled him towards her, "Yes"
She couldn't take her eyes of him as he removed his shorts, the sight of his naked body made her quiver with excitement, he was truly a magnificent man.
Taking her in his arms he kissed her passionately, the love he had for her showed in his kiss, his touch.
Her body screamed for more but he was being careful, her rape clearly in his thoughts besides he didn't want a quick jump, the kind where you banged briefly with heavy grunts than sat back for a smoke, he wanted to love her, to make love, to show her how much he wanted and cared for her.
His hands ran over her inch by inch, burning the memory of every curve into his mind; encouraging her to do the same.
He explored with his tongue, hearing a low squeal as he came to her breasts, taking each one before travelling further.
She moaned as he reached her thighs, arching her back as he tasted her, the sensations flowing through her were agonisingly beautiful.
Desperately she pulled him back, her action not lost on Chase but not yet.
His mouth claimed hers, she held him close her free hand moved down to his length, causing him to growl.
Ash needed him, needed to feel him, her longing almost ravenous.
Chase shifted, using his knee to push her legs apart.
Ash moaned as he entered her, lifting her legs to take all of him.
He gasped as he felt her warmth surround him, a wave of different sensations hit at once almost sending him over; the moan from him was one of pure delight and satisfaction.
She held him tight each trust causing her to gasp, her nails dug into his flesh heightening his own excitement.
Crying out as she peeked the tears started to fall, Chase stopped but Ash shook her head urging him on.
He watched as her tears ran down her face but didn't understand.
She cried out on release, sex to her had always been sordid and quick the rape confirming her belief but this, the was wonderful, earth shattering.
He watched as she slept, pushing a strand of hair from her face he allowed the dark locks to wind round his fingers.
He thought he'd hurt her, done something wrong but the tears she shed were not of sadness.
He had done as she asked, kept going till his own climax but now felt guilty, each thrust had only caused more tears, he felt her release which only confused the situation more.
Realisation hit him like a semi, an understanding of what she had just gone through, the door of her coldness, her frigidness had opened.
His heart swelled as he realised it was him, his love that had unlocked the door, throwing the key away.
Ash sat at the edge of the pool her feet submerged in the cool water.
Chase had been right, a few licks of paint and some new furniture and stuff and the place started to feel more like a home.
Their relationship had moved on too, from the first night she had slept with him she had shared his bed since, their lovemaking growing more intense, more energetic.
No matter how deep her feeling ran towards Chase she couldn't say the L word, if it crept into her mind she pushed it firmly back, 'Love' was commitment, heartache and pain.
"Having fun?" Chase asked as he appeared beside her.
"Just cooling off, I'll make lunch"
He watched as she sliced the tomatoes for the salad, "I'm being sent to Afghanistan, I'll be away for three months"
"Oh"
He had expected a bit more, "I have to oversee a squad till their Commander returns, he's on compassionate leave"
Ash said nothing just carried on slicing; she refused to turn and look at him, she didn't want him to see her tears.
Chase felt deflated, he had hoped this would have made some sort of impact on her, maybe not told him of her undying love for him but said something.
They sat in stony silence, neither looking at the other.
Ash couldn't eat, she felt sick, why did he have go?
She should say something but every time she opened her mouth her voice refused to work, where would he be stationed, what if he never returned, loosing someone else in her life was just another reason not to care?
Chase was crushed, he had thought she would be upset by his going but she seemed unaffected, uncaring, he would spend his time worrying if she would be waiting for him when he got back.
Finally he left the table his lunch untouched and headed to his room.
Ash was washing the dishes when he emerged from his room, his uniform replaced by jeans and a shirt.
"Ash we need to talk!"
"Your being sent there, what else is there to talk about?"
"How do you feel, I mean will you miss me ?"
"I suppose"
Her coldness surprised him, did she care so little for him, was he being used all this time?
"Fuck, you really are an uncaring bitch, what was it, I was good for money and a roll?"
His words cut threw her, each one a stab to the heart but she couldn't.
"I guess there's nothing else then, I expect you'll be gone when I return!"
Swinging on his heels he headed back to his room slamming the door behind him.
The following morning Chase packed, he hadn't seen Ash since last night and didn't want to, the pain from her rejection still raw.
Closing the door he walked across the complex stopping at the roadside to wait for his ride.
"Wait, Chase!" Ash ran towards him, as she got close she leapt at him throwing her arms round his neck, "I love you" she murmured through her sobs.
"You do?"
"Yes, I have for so long but I didn't want to admit it; every time I cared for someone they left or hurt me....I was scared"
"I won't leave you" he assured her, his heart bursting with happiness.
"You are now, what if.....?"
Getting down on one knee he produced a box from his jacket.
"I have had this for months, hoping...Ayashe Wildhorse, will you do me the honour of being my wife"
Ash squealed as the light reflected of the diamond sending coloured sparkles into the air.
"Oh Chase yes, oh yes"
Sliding the ring on her finger he felt as if he would burst, he wanted to take her home to their room but it wasn't possible.
The car pulled up, the driver honked the horn, Chase indicating to the driver he'd be two minutes.
Encircling her in his arms he kissed her passionately, "I have to go" he told her sadly.
"What if....?"
Smiling he geld her tight, "I will be back, we have a wedding to plan"
With a kiss he headed to the car, throwing his stuff in the back he climbed in.
Ash watched as the car moved off, waving till he was out of sight.
Chase watched her, the car turned the corner, settling down he grinned like a Cheshire cat.
"For someone getting sent out you look very happy" the driver commented.
"Yeah" replied Chase, "I just got engaged"
Iron mum,
ReplyDeleteGreat job, a real, deep old fashioned romance that had all the elements. Chase was a fantastic hero, (love that sim, use him myself!) Like his sister described, hard, but with a heart of gold. He was stunning.
And I almost drooled on my keyboard when he walked in with his full uniform, gorgeous!
You captured Ash's vulnerability and pain, how horrible for her, but it was fate she wound up in Chase's bar to be sure. You showed her tentative transition to love and trust extremely well!
I just love happy endings, love the wedding shots!
I loved this Iron Mum, take a bow, mate!
Thank you for sharing this story with us.
ReplyDeleteIt was obvious from the start that there was chemistry between Ash and Chase, but they had been hurt before and you captured their reluctance well. I loved how you described the way they both danced around each other, dropping their facade occasionally but mostly keeping it intact to protect themselves, even when they moved in together.
I'm so glad they both overcame their fears at the end, I have a feeling Ash would never have forgiven herself if she had let Chase go.
Hi Drew, I'm so glad you liked it, I was a bit worried as it didn't go the way I planned.
ReplyDeleteIt was supposed to go a different direction but ended up having to put him back in the Corps, I must admit he did look good in uniform.
Hi Illandrya, glad you enjoyed it and sorry it ended up so long.
ReplyDeleteNot the way the story was supposed to go and I did think of killing him off but changed my mind, I couldn't do it.
I have a new story in progress and hopefully will be up soon.
